And there are plenty of contemporary authors who carry on this literary tradition. In this list, we've compiled eleven British writers who have created wonderful works of romance. Romance novels mainly revolve around the relationship between two characters, and they allow writers to branch out into several different genres and subplots. People love reading them because they offer a nice escape from reality, especially because they usually have a happy ending.

A lot of the works that influenced modern romance novels date all the way back to the 19th century, and some of the pioneering authors of the genre, such as Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte, came from the UK. With that in mind, we've compiled a list of eleven British authors who write incredible romance. Take note that this list is done in no particular order.

First up, at #1, is Jodi Ellen Malpas. She's a New York Times Bestselling Author who's best known for her "This Man" series, which mostly focuses on a woman named Ava O'Shea and her relationship with Jesse Ward, a rich playboy. Due to her popularity, live-action adaptations of her books, including her hit series "This Man," are being produced by a streaming platform called PassionFlix.

Second, at #2, is USA Today bestselling author Sam Crescent. As a huge fan of romantic fiction, Crescent started writing her own novels in 2009. She's known for writing steamy erotic literature with curvy heroines, and most of her series, such as "The Skulls" and "Trojans MC," revolve around different fictional motorcycle clubs.

Next up, at #3, is Suzanne Wright. She published her debut novel, "Here Be Sexist Vampires" in 2012. This marked the beginning of her "Deep In Your Veins" series, which mainly revolves around the intimate relationships between vampires and the struggles that their kind has to deal with. A lot of her novels feature supernatural creatures, such as demons and shapeshifters.

At #4 is Scarlett Cole. She's known for her "Second Circle Tattoos" series, which revolves around the eponymous tattoo parlor and its staff. For multiple years, Cole has been a finalist of the RITA Awards, which are held annually by an organization called "Romance Writers of America," or RWA for short. Most notably, her book "The Strongest Steel" was recognized by the RWA as both one of the best debut novels and romantic suspense stories of 2016.

Next, at #5, is Sofie Hartley. She's a contemporary romance author whose breakout debut novel, "Finding You," was released in late 2013. She also owns a company called "Hart and Bailey," which mainly specializes in creating book covers and building up the brands of companies and fellow authors.

At #6, we have Samantha Towle. She started writing her first novel in 2008, and since then, she's managed to break into several bestseller lists. Towle mostly writes contemporary romance, but she's also occasionally dabbled in the paranormal subgenre. Most of her books are inspired by her favorite musicians, and on her website, she often briefly explains how she came up with certain stories.

Next up, at #7, we have Rona Jameson, who mainly writes under the pseudonym of Lexi Buchanan. She's a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author who writes contemporary romantic suspense books, but she's more widely known for writing erotic "new adult" novels under her pen name.

At #8 is Lindsey Kelk. Formerly an editor of children's books, she's a Sunday Times bestselling author who's best known for writing chick lit novels. Early in her career, her first book "I Heart New York" was rejected by every publisher she approached. Eventually, she landed a deal with HarperCollins, and this allowed her to carry on with her popular "I Heart" series.

Next, at #9, is Jill Mansell. She's generally regarded as one of the most popular chick lit authors in the world, and a lot of her books have appeared on several different bestseller lists. Before she started writing full time, she was working in clinical neurophysiology for England's National Health Service. According to her, she was inspired to start writing after she read an article about regular women who became wealthy bestselling authors.

Next up, at #10, is Abigail Gibbs. Born and raised in Devon, England, she is a paranormal romance author who's best known for creating "The Dark Heroine" series, which is heavily inspired by Stephanie Meyer's widely popular "Twilight" books. She first started out on an online publishing platform called Wattpad. There, her debut novel "Dinner With A Vampire," which was eventually published by HarperCollins, managed to gain millions of views.
